Festival season is truly upon us and with crowds flocking to Glastonbury – hopefully armed with waterproofs and wellies to battle the rain (not to rub in that we enjoyed glorious sunshine there last year…) – I thought it time to reflect on the wonderful Saturday that I had last weekend at the lesser-known, but tremendously important, FESTIFEEL.
For those of you who are not familiar with this fantastic event, let me give you some background. It is run by the amazing Coppafeel! charity which was founded by Kris Hallenga in 2009 following a late diagnosis of breast cancer at 23. Its aim is to get young people checking their boobs regularly – a healthy habit which could save their lives. Kris’ story was recently broadcast on BBC3 – you can watch Kris: Dying to Live here to find out more.
I was first introduced to Coppafeel! by Hannah Cope, my wonderful uni housemate and one of my best friends who was the Durham Uni Boob Team rep and part of the very first uni boob team initiative. Coppafeel! took Durham by storm – encouraging people to join the monthly reminder service, cake sales and formals – we, and many other uni teams around the UK, did all we could to spread the word.
So let’s just say, this is a cause that is extremely close to my heart. The Coppafeel! team are a great bunch of fun-loving people working their socks off to save people’s lives. With Fearne Cotton as their patron, a small, vibrant festival formed a perfect event to continue raising awareness whilst also supporting up-and-coming artists. And thus, FESTIFEEL was born.
Hannah and I had a wonderful time. From fresh wood-fired pizzas and cocktail ice lollies, to a fabulous beauty parlour offering vintage hair styling, glitter lips and nail painting, there was so much to enjoy. And I haven’t even mentioned the line-up! The acts that played throughout the festival transformed the atmosphere – bringing the summery festival vibe right into Hackney. Highlights for me included the beautifully soulful Lianne La Havas and those downright crazy kids, Rizzle Kicks.
Even when I managed to lose my purse at the end of the night (idiot), the Coppafeel! team were ON IT. They took all my details, helped me search the venue and all the time remained optimistic. And it definitely paid off – a very kind soul returned my purse, complete with cards and cash. I love these people.
All in all, it was the perfect Saturday. There was music, merriment and plenty of money raised for this worthy cause. Thank you SO much to Kris, Fearne, all the acts/entertainment and of course, the mighty Coppafeel! team. You’re all amazing.
Last, but not least, I want to give a big shout out to the wonderful Hannah Cope who invited me to FESTIFEEL and continues to be an avid Coppafeel! supporter. Much boob love for you.
Get checking guys and gals.
